Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
When my little sister Sherri was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 48, we were completely unaware of the existence of the BRCA2 genetic mutation which so greatly increased our chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer. After Sherri's surgery and chemotherapy were completed, I was at my doctor's office for a routine check-up, and she suggested I have genetic testing. The testing uncovered a mutation on my BRCA2 gene. For me the decision was easy. Having seen what my sister had to endure, I chose to drastically reduce my chances of breast and ovarian cancer by having prophylactic surgeries - a bi-lateral salpingo oophorectomy and a mastectomy with reconstruction. Not going to lie, it was a pretty tough year, but I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to take steps to significantly lower my cancer risk. Through it all, the women I met through FORCE supported me with information and friendship.
My sister, thankfully, is doing very well with no evidence of cancer. However, the need to provide information and a support system for women and families facing hereditary cancer is very much illustrated by her story. At no point did anyone suggest to her, even with an established family history of breast cancer, that she be tested for the mutation. We can help insure that other women have the knowledge on hand to proactively handle their risk of cancer by supporting FORCE in its efforts to improve the lives of individuals and families faced with hereditary breast and ovarian cancers.
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
