On Tuesday, September 18, 2007 we took Ellie to the Pediatrician for what we thought was a possible ear infection. Unfortunately, Ellie’s lab work revealed very low and abnormal blood counts. After consultation with the Hematology group at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY, we immediately went there for further testing. These tests revealed that Ellie had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a form of blood cancer. She began treatment immediately. The initial phase was very aggressive and difficult on her. Most of the first month after diagnosis was spent on 7 West at Kosair. Fortunately, the treatment plan in this first month was effective in controlling ALL, and her prognosis was good.
For the next two plus years, she received numerous chemotherapy treatments, endured spinal taps, and made countless trips to the clinic and hospital. All the while, she kept her sunny outlook, and her positive attitude provided those around her with strength and inspiration. Her treatment plan wrapped up on New Year’s Eve 2009. She is still monitored closely by the Pediatric Hematology / Oncology group that cared for her these past few years.
Currently, Ellie is thriving in school where she plays soccer and volleyball for her school’s team. She loves crafts and fashion designing. She is taking dance lessons and loves to play with her two little sisters. She continues to inspire those around her and provide hope to others who are in tough battles in their life.
