Welcome to the fundraising page for Dr. Bobby Friedmann's "Named Legacy Fund" for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN).  

 

My father Roberto was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on August 4th, 1953. When he started at the English prep-school St. Catherines at age 5, he was nicknamed Bobby.  He came to the United States in 1973 to attend the University of Kansas, where here earned his Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics, Master of Business Administration, and his PhD in Marketing. In 1984 he was hired as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Georgia where he earned tenure as an Associate Professor.

He passed away September 24th, 2011.

Below are a few lines from an open letter he wrote to many of his student that started the Facebook group "We Love Dr. Friedmann" while he battled Pancreatic Cancer.

I have always preached that the way to beat cancer is screening for early detection. Both my wife and I are living proof... Unfortunately, there is no early detection for pancreatic cancer.

After 27 years at UGA, where I taught with as much passion and joy as I could muster, I am definitely going to miss not going back to work. The thousands of students that I met in my journey certainly enriched my life.

• Pancreatic Cancer is the least funded of the top five deadliest cancers

• 94% of patients die within five years of diagnosis, highest of all cancers tracked by American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute 

• 74% die within one year

• The survival rate has not improved substantially in the 40 years since passage of the National Cancer Act.
