Golf Course Family's Fundraising Page
A few weeks ago we received a phone call from the manager of a golf course in Los Angeles. He and his employees had discovered a family of pit bulls living in a wooded area in the golf course. Employees had reported seeing two adults and many babies. We knew we were pressed for time; these dogs didn’t have access... to necessary food and water, they were constantly spooked by the golfers on the green, and we definitely didn't want them to be taken to the pound where they would most likely face the unfortunate fate that millions of helpless animals face in our country each year – death.
We made multiple trips out to the golf course to assess the situation. We were able to catch two puppies, Kathy and Heathcliff, who were very scared. They went directly into a foster home where they learned what life is supposed to be like…cuddles, play time, plenty of food and water, and doggie friends! Another trip out to the golf course sent five more puppies into foster care with their siblings - Brandon Flowers, Twitch, Nike, Tess and Pixie.
We knew that catching the mom and dad would be the hardest part of this rescue effort; we had come into close contact with the dad before, only to see him bolt across the green, leading him far away from us. Mom was confused and shy, and kept her distance. We couldn’t blame them – they had obviously been failed by humans in the past.
We obtained a humane trap in the woods, and re-visited the area in the morning. We were shocked to find dad calmly waiting in the trap. He didn’t bolt, didn’t bite – quite the gentle soul. We named him Chester, after the golf course, and took him to the foster home where he was welcomed with a warm blanket, food, and a much needed bath. As you can see in his pictures, poor Chester suffers from a condition called entropion, a congenital defect in which the eyelids are turned inward, leading the eyelashes to constantly rub against the cornea. Untreated, this condition can lead to corneal injuries and even blindness.
We headed back to the golf course to re-set the trap. The next morning, mom was patiently waiting in the trap. We named her Birdie for the fact that she found refuge at a golf course. Birdie was taken to be reunited with her pups and boyfriend…and boy were they happy!
We need help raising funds for Chester’s eye surgery to correct his entropion and save his sight, and to spay/neuter, vaccinate and microchip all nine dogs. We also need to funds for boarding Chester and Birdie.
Scared, homeless, hungry and pregnant is where Birdie started this journey with Chester by her side. Now, thanks to the help of many selfless and kindhearted individuals, Birdie, Chester and their family will now get to experience the joys that life has to offer.
Please help Karma Rescue in our mission to provide the Golf Course Family with the lives that they have always deserved. Please donate, re-post, etc..every little bit helps. We appreciate your continued support – we could not do this without our volunteers and donors!
Thank you from the bottom of our paws!
