I am so excited about Team PHenomenal Hope and their bicycle race across America! I met the team at the Pulmonary Hypertension Conference in the spring of 2012. They will be riding 3,000 miles across the continent in 9 days (beginning June 14th) on behalf of PH patients like me to raise awareness and funds to fight PH. As a bicycle rider myself I was interested in what they were doing and thrilled that they would put such energy and time into raising awareness and funds.
I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension 12 years ago! When I was first diagnosed, I had no idea what the future would hold. The average survival rate of a person diagnosed with PH back then was 2 to 8 years after diagnosis. There were only 3 treatments at the time. 2 were intravenous and one was an oral pill. I started on that pill (Tracleer). Now the survival rate is better, there are 9 FDA approved treatments and I am thankful to say that I am doing remarkably well! There is much hope for PH patients, but there is still much to be done. There is still no cure. Many are not diagnosed early in the disease so many suffer greatly and the disease progresses.
My goal is to raise awareness of PH and to raise funds for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association so that others can be diagnosed early as I was and quickly benefit from treatment as I have. My desire is to see PH patients thrive, and to see researchers find a cure for this disease. I want to ride my bike 3,000 miles between November 1, 2013 and June 14, 2014 in solidarity with Team PHenomenal Hope and my fellow PH patients! Will you join me in the race of our lives?
