Acacia’s Mission
Acacia Adult Day Services is a leader in providing services to improve and enhance the lives of frail older adults, persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or other types of dementia, persons with disabilities, and their families.

This Project’s Mission
According to Alzheimer's Association , mental decline as you age appears to be largely due to altered connections among brain cells. But research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections. You could even generate new brain cells. Therefore, at Acacia, we take brain health very seriously. We offer many programs that help maintain or improve the cognitive abilities of our clients, but one of our most cutting-edge, successful new programs involves the use of computers.

The beauty of utilizing computers is the absolute variety of activities that our older adults can engage in. These activities include games that strengthen memory and problem solving skills as well as enlist the use of mental strategy; games that educate in the areas of math, art, vocabulary, and foreign languages; and games that require auditory and visual attention as well as improve reflexes. Since the start of our computer program in February of 2011, some of our clients have already gained a working knowledge of how to operate the computer so that they now can just walk right to a computer and independently choose the activities that they like. The independence gives these older adults a chance to learn a great deal and enjoy the accompanying feelings of success and pride that come along with being able to do so much on their own.

The need
Unfortunately, with limited resources, Acacia is unable to meet the growing demands as the number of clients who are interested in participating in the computer program increases. By supporting our cause and donating to this program, you will be assisting us in helping our older adults stay cognitively and intellectually active, thus reducing their risk to develop Alzheimer’s.

Some of the items that the proceeds from this fundraising campaign will be used to purchase for are as followed:

Inexpensive yet operable tablets (much less expensive and much more user-friendly than computers)
New computer mice and mouse pads (the ones we have are very old and are extremely difficult for the clients to maneuver)
Speakers (for games that more than one person can engage in at a time)
