The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center is an excellent organization providing many essential services to survivors and working to prevent this endemic problem through education programs in schools.

From the FBI's own statistics, somewhere between 20 and 95% of all rapes go unreported in the U.S.  Of those reported, only about 50% of them are "founded", meaning that police believe the survivor only half of the time.  Of the "founded" rapes, 51% of perpetrators are apprehended, and of these 76% are prosecuted.  Of these, depending on geographic area, 3 - 47% are convicted.  If you are following along with the math, this means that even in the best case scenario, 7% of all rapists spend a night in jail.  From the worst case, it is 1/3 of 1%.

The statistics of rape are staggering.  It is highly likely that a woman you know has been a victim of sexual assault.

But there is a glimmer of hope: according to rainn.org, the incidence of reported rape has fallen 69% since 1993, and a large part of that has been due to the kinds of education programs that BARCC provides.
