It's that time of year again... On July the 4th, 2010, Golden Gate Basset Rescue will take part in the Independence Day Parade in the city of Novato. It is also Novato's 50th Birthday, so it's a double celebration this year! It's also our main fundraiser of the year. We rely on the pledges raised for this Waddle to fund the medical expenses for our rescued basset hounds.
This year has been very challenging so far for GGBR. The 61 hounds taken in on December 18, 2009 have been a huge drain on our resources. Since February we have had three litters of puppies, with another on the way. We've had dogs in the emergency room several times. Emaciated dogs, dogs with huge tumors to remove, and just routine medical bills running to over $30,000 so far.
GGBR's income is usually around $50K, and we scrape through the year due to the generosity of our donors. This year we are looking at needing at least $80K, so the donations need to be increased as well... and all this at a time of economic recession, so that people can afford to give less.
That is why every dollar that you can pledge for Jess' 'sponsored Waddle' is important to us. We have very low operational expenses. No paid staff, no premises to pay for. Almost every penny raised goes to vet bills, boarding, training and items for the hounds.
This year, Jess is joined by Columbo (Lord Columbo of Chico per his AKC papers), her 11 yr old foster brother. He's a grand old boy, and he's forever grateful to GGBR for finding him a retirement home to spend his last years in, rather than face euthanization when his owners could no longer care for him. We don't discriminate for age or health of the dogs we take in... our only limiting force is finances and foster homes!
