Alan Harrison's Page
Welcome to my personal Ski-A-Thon Fundraising Page. My name is Alan Harrison and I am from Alfred, Maine. I have been a participant in the Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation program (formally Maine Handicapped Skiing) for the past five years as a downhill skier at Sunday River. Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation provides the finest in adaptive lessons in winter and summer activities for adults, children, and Veterans with disabilities. (Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Cross Country Skiing, Biking, Golf, Canoeing and Kayaking to name a few)
This program means the world to me and so many others. When I was diagnosed with a rare adult mitochondrial disease with cerebellar ataxia seven years ago, I feared that any sport or outdoor activity that I enjoyed would become very limited or even cease. My family and I were avid skiers and to think that might end for me was very discouraging. I found out about this program through my wife who strongly encouraged me to try. This program has changed my life tremendously. It has given me back my self esteem, helped me to regain my self confidence to try new challenges, and keeps me motivated to do the best I can with the cards that I have been dealt.
The instructors are all VOLUNTEERS (hundreds of them) and the programs ,lessons, and use of the costly adaptive equipment is always FREE of charge to all participants. I wouldn’t be able to ski if not for the use of the adaptive equipment. The Ski~A~Thon is the major fundraiser of the year. It provides an opportunity for the staff, volunteers, and participants and their families to get together to raise money for a great cause, while enjoying a day of skiing. All donations are tax deductible. I thank you in advance for your support and ask you to please forward my page to as many people as possible. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. A big thank you goes out to all that have donated so far for this great program. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure.
Thanks so much,
