Alexa Navasero - Sierra Leone Mission
How it all started...
Last spring some of my peers and I traveled to Accra, Ghana on a social entrepreneurial mission to help the New Horizon Special School--a school for children with symptoms in the aspergers and autism spectra. It was Seven Hills Global Outreach's (SHGO) first mission. The trip was a huge success! We volunteered as teaching assistants in classrooms and donated what seemed to be an endless amount of school supplies. We even met the founder and president of the school (Mrs. Francois - a social entrepreneur herself!), developed a sustainable relationship with the school and continue to support them to this day. Feel free to browse through some of the pictures I took in Ghana on my Flickr page.
Back at Clark, news and stories of our trip delighted and excited all of our friends and professors. This trip to Ghana sparked interest in the students and we all came together and developed Clark's Social Entrepreneurship Club (CSEC). I am currently the president of CSEC. We aim to learn, teach and practice social entrepreneurship locally and globally. Furthermore, professors and deans of Clark are supporting us and developed a course where students can take global field excursions (like Ghana) each semester!
Now...
In January 2010, I will be traveling with fellow Clark University students to Bo, Sierra Leone for a second SHGO mission to help make a sustainable impact on the maternal death rate. We will be working with Fresh-Hope Ministries, a faith-based organization that needs help caring for orphans abandoned at birth as well as teaching midwives how to deliver more successful births. Please visit the YouTube video on the left to learn more about the maternal mortality. We hope to build a relationship with Fresh-Hope Ministries that will only continue to grow from here on out, giving other Clark students the opportunity to make a positive change on our world.
In the future I hope to take all these valuable experiences and lessons from my journeys to Ghana and Sierra Leone to make positive changes to the country home to my ancestors--the Philippines.
How can you help?
I need to raise $2000 by January. This covers the cost of travel expenses, housing, and food for ten days in Bo.
You can send donations directly through this website. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. I promise I won't let you down!! If you have any questions about the specifics of my cause please e-mail me at anavasero@clarku.edu
Also, please feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
Thank you so much for your support :)
Love,
Alexa
