Why Care about Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian Cancer can be treated if detected early.

  • Ovarian cancer survival rates are much lower than other cancers that affect women.
  • The deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, O.C. is the 5th leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women.
  • Occurs in 1 out of 67 women.
  • About 20,000 women are diagnosed annually.
  • About 15,000 women in the US die from ovarian cancer each year.
  • Currently, 55% of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from it within 5 years; among African-American women, only 40% survive 5 years.
  • Awareness of Symptoms and Early Detection are KEY!!

  • The vast majority of cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries.
  • The majority of  women with ovarian cancer experience varying symptoms that often mimic those of less life-threatening conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
  • With early detection, the survival rate increases DRAMATICALLY - more than 93% of women survive longer than 5 years.
  • There is a need for researchers to develop a comprehensive screening tool for ovarian cancer.

More On My Charity:

The Norma Livingston Foundation  is committed to improving the survival rates and quality of life for women fighting ovarian cancer, the silent killer.  The Foundation provides funding for ovarian cancer research at UAB Hospital, helps raise awareness, and promotes education about ovarian cancer.
