Allison's Walk to Cure Cancer Page
Last year I participated in the Walk to Cure Cancer, but I little did I know of the role Cancer would play in my life in the following year. My mother was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in December of 2008, which has spread to her liver and brain. She began palliative (not curative) treatments, with 6 rounds of brutal chemotherapy and 3 weeks of brain irradiation. Her cancer is very aggressive and although initially responded to treatment her tumors have now doubled in size and she will begin a regular chemotherapy treatment. Her doctors have not been optimistic with her prognosis. For more information check out my moms blog: http:kickingthecancergator.blogspot.com
I am walking in her honor this year, and I ask that you consider walking, if you are in the area, or donating to this great cause. My mother has been my best friend, confident, and major supporter and it is devastating that this disease will take her away from me.
The money raised supports cancer research at UMass Medical school, where I am a graduate student. Although my mother will not directly benefit from the funds earned, my classmates will benefit who do cancer research, as well as the important cancer research at the hospital. Only through research can we create new and better therapies and hopefully cures.
