Although relationships change over the years and faces change, some things remain constant. Like other yearly occurrences, holidays and birthdays, it has become a tradition to support and participate in the Massachusetts ALA’s “Autumn Escape to the
Cape ” Bike Trek. This will be my 12th year as part of Team Alpha-1 and the
Cape ride. Originally our participation was to help encourage those with lung problems to take part in a event that was established as a fund raiser for the American Lung Association and along the way we would promote awareness and encourage detection for Alpha-1. Alphas and their families came together yearly; some riding, some volunteering and others cheering the riders on as they pedaled from Plymouth to
Provincetown . For the most part the
ALA has embraced our efforts and saluted our determination to participate. With the strong sponsorship by Bayer, now Talecris, we have been able to use this event as a fundraiser for our own Foundation as well as the ALA. I hope you can get behind our efforts by pledging your support for our riders.
Our numbers have reached as high as 40 with a cadre of willing volunteers. Our ranks have included the “Slow Riders,” also known as the SOBs who ride with oxygen strapped to their backs and bikes. We have a number of lung-transplant recipients riding, led by Team Alpha founder and Captain, Mary Pierce.
The American Lung Association of Massachusetts' Autumn Escape Bike Trek is a fun, 3-day, 160-mile 'at-your-own-pace' tour along Cape Cod, Massachusetts (2-day, 105-mile option available). We ride RAIN or SHINE to promote awareness of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) and raise dollars for research to help find a cure.
