When a baby is born with a broken heart, grown-up hearts break too. My heart was broken the day I found out my baby would be born fighting for his life. Not only did I have to deal with the strong and real threat to my son’s life, I had to use my brain to learn all kinds of intricate and detailed medical information, and then make the ultimate decisions about how and if we were even going to try to save his life.
To find the energy to learn, to fight, and to ultimately make sound decisions in a terrifying and complicated world, I needed hope. Nothing is more powerful than hope and knowledge in the face of fear and uncertainty. After months of isolation dealing with Liam’s complicated heart, I founded a support group called Hypoplastic Right Hearts.
Hypoplastic Right Hearts is a 501(c) 3 non profit serving nearly 630 families from all over the world in their own searches for knowledge and hope. Thousands like Liam and tens of thousands of babies have open heart surgery before they even have their first meal. Some babies with this disease are never even held by their mothers until days or weeks after they are born. Imagine their broken hearts and empty arms; you can help them feel less helpless and less hopeless by raising hope with HRH.
Any baby can be born with a broken heart; but any one, including you, can help our families heal with hope and education. Liam’s broken heart can never be truly fixed, but through hope and education my heart has healed enough to help myself and more importantly to help others fight for our children and their futures.
