HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OUR FUTURE LEADERS?
Jeronimo is a sixth grader at Elmhurst Community Prep. Last semester, he took a typing apprenticeship where he learned proper typing techniques, key concepts related to typing, and the importance of having typing skills in today's digital era. By the end of the class, Jeronimo improved his typing skills from 9 WPM to 25 WPM, and was able to use and develop his newfound skills to efficiently complete writing assignments and do research on the computer. What most students his age will never have the opportunity to do and what many young adults may not learn until they are in high school or college, Jeronimo learned in 10 weeks thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers of Citizen Schools.
Citizen Schools is a non-profit organization that partners with low-income middle schools nationwide to extend the learning day by providing a "second shift', from 2:00-5:00 p.m. During this time, students receive homework help, academic coaching, and firsthand experience with future careers through apprenticeships taught by volunteers and professionals from the community. Our program has created a tangible world of possibilities for our students and builds their access to college and rewarding careers.
