Pittsburgh Marathon - Staff Relay AND 5K!

As many of you know, I completed my first marathon in 2009. After months of training, Saturday morning runs in blizzards, and finally the day of the marathon, I finished happy with my performance, but eager to put all of that hard work toward a greater good.

In the weeks, months, and years that followed, I witnessed the following:

--wide-eyed middle school students in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania learning about life in China or music in Nigeria--and the world outside of their communities.

--urban and rural high school students whose lives were changed by traveling overseas through the Global Travel Scholarship Program--an opportunity they wouldn't have had without the Council.

--kids in Pittsburgh talking with their peers in Brazil, Italy, Greece, India, Pakistan, the Republic of Georgia, South Africa, Taiwan, and Tanzania talking about important world issues via video conference--and creating global understanding.

This is just a sampling of the work at the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to educate the Pittsburgh community on global issues. The Council also makes a special effort to bring the world to young people with few opportunities to venture outside of their communities.

I'm delighted to run with as part of a relay team to support an organization that has become part of my life's work before heading back into charity village to support our runners on Sunday! I'm also very excited to walk the 5K on Saturday with some of the inspirational and innovative teachers who traveled to Europe with the Council this summer.

Funds raised through this page will help to bring global education programming to underserved schools in urban to rural areas in the Pittsburgh region. Check out these recent articles on our programs:

Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.

Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!  And if you'd like to volunteer the day of the race, we'd love to have you!!
