Andrew ("Drew") Hosea's Fundraising Page
I am attempting to raise $10,000 to support two remote eye camps, which would help restore sight to approximately 500 people through low cost cataract eye surgeries (approximately $20 per person) with the Himalayan Cataract Project in memory of my sister, Mary Beth Hosea. On July 14, 2011, my sister, Mary Beth (or "MB" as we called her) would have been 40 years old. "MB" passed away at the age of 33 from a malignent brain tumor, which caused her to slowly lose her sight. So, while she did not lose her sight due to cataracts, I think "MB" would be proud to know that in her memory and honor, 500 people around the world will be given the chance to have their sight restored and to see once again!!
Each outreach microsurgical eye clinic or “eye camp” costs approximately $5,000. An “eye camp”, will screen approximately 1,500 patients and restore sight to 250 people in the Himalayas or in Africa. This equates to only $20 per patient to restore their site! Additionally, local medical providers will receive further training and ongoing support from the Himalayan Cataract Project. 39 million people are blind worldwide - 80% of which are from preventable or treatable reasons. 90% of the blind live in developing countries with a severe lack of proper medical care. These "eye camps" will bring healing directly to those in need.
Again, thank you for visiting my fundraising page - my personal goal is to raise enough donations to conduct two remote eye camps via the Himalayan Cataract Project. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts and to achieve this goal. Many thanks for your support. On behalf of MB's memory, and the 500 people that will have the opportunity to see once again, a hundred-million-thousand THANK YOUs!! :-p - Andrew "Drew" Hosea and Family
