She could be a resident at Lutheran Services in Iowa's Bremwood campus in Waverly, Iowa. Abused by her mother and her drug-addicted boyfriend, she was removed from her home by the Department of Human Services when she was 10. Following in her mother's footsteps, she turned to drugs - even though her own behavior disgusted her. Lacking any positive role models or coping skills, she began to cut herself as a way to see the pain she felt.

 

After years of bouncing among residential treatment centers, juvenile detention centers, and foster homes, she arrives at LSI's Bremwood campus, with all her belongings stuffed into a garbage bag. She knew this place would be different. She could see and feel that this place could help her change her life.

 

While this life story is fictional, the chapters in it are all too real - a history shared by hundreds of Iowa's at-risk youth served by Lutheran Services in Iowa's Bremwood campus.
