Help send Thomas Kay to New Zealand
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
It is hard to describe Thomas' medical history because so many doctors have left his family and friends with so many unanswered questions. In 2008 he developed paralysis on his left side of his body, starting in his leg and after a short period of time moving into his arm. At first doctors believed Thomas had a slip disc in his back from playing rugby but as things progressed Thomas was admitted into the hospital in August 2008 where he received his 1st of 4 craniotomies. After each craniotomy there was some new mystery and in October 2008 Thomas was admitted as a full time patient to Victoria General Hospital. Doctors came to numerous diagnoses including that he had T Cell Lymphoma of the brain. Thomas went on to received 28 brain radiation treatments until doctors gave up and said there was nothing more they could do for him. Throughout the radiation Thomas’ left side became completely paralyzed, his right side became extremely weak, he lost his eyesight, short term memory and the ability to communicate. Thomas friends and family were put through a roller-coaster of not knowing what was going on and what was going to happen next for him. He was moved out of Victoria General Hospital to Duncan Hospital to just be taken care of. With no intervention or medical help Thomas started to make small improvements. His charismatic attitude and ability to believe in the impossible has put him where he is today. He believed in the impossible, and that his positivity would be the best medicine. Thomas believes that whatever was plaguing him is gone and he is determined to get back to himself.
Tom LOVES rugby more than anything and is an amazing athlete. He knows all the teams and players and follows all the games. Before his health took a turn for the worst, he was an amazing rugby player and was going to be playing for the University of Victoria’s Vikes team on scholarship. It’s his dream to go to the Rugby World Cup and meet the New Zealand All Blacks (his favourite team). He has been sent a few gifts from his favourite player on the team throughout his hardship and has had rugby memorabilia all over his hospital room. Rugby is what keeps Tom going and I know that being unable to play it is an extreme challenge for him. Tom would love to meet the All Blacks. It would be his dream.
