The Transnational AIDS Prevention Among Migrant Prostitutes in Europe Project (TAMPEP) in Turin, Italy, a non-profit organization that assists women and children trafficked into Italy, has invited me to join their organization for three months during my summer break from graduate school. HUMAN TRAFFICKING IMPLIES ENSLAVEMENT AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION, and this problem exists in pandemic proportions. TAMPEP's renowned approach holds important lessons for other countries, including the United States, that are also struggling to break up trafficking rings and assist victims. An estimated 45,000 to 50,000 WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE TRAFFFICKED INTO THE US EVERY YEAR and of them the average age is 20 (ECPAT-USA.org). Human slavery and sexual abuse demands the attention of every level of society. Italian authorities reach more victims of trafficking than any other European country. In volunteering with TAMPEP, I will assist with outreach to victims and in providing them with necessary services. My research on Italy’s approach to trafficking will work to impact education and legislation in the US and abroad to assist a greater number of women and children. As a non-profit organization, TAMPEP is not able to cover the costs of my traveling to Italy. Therefore, I am writing to request your sponsorship for this endeavor. With the help of federal loans, which are in addition to the loans that are assisting me with the costs of my graduate school education, I will be able to cover some of my living expenses in Turin. However, I estimate that I will need to raise an additional $3000 in order to cover all the costs of volunteering for this organization from the end of May through August 2006. If you would be willing to donate $25, $50, $100 or any amount to this cause, it would be profoundly appreciated— it would help cover these costs and, in turn, benefit the women and girls whose lives and well-being TAMPEP is working to secure from victimization.
