Hey there!! So, you're visitng Hailey and April McKee's fundraising page in honor of our most favorite man ever....Mack McKee. You've probably been referred here by someone who thinks your generous and compassionate and willing to help out for a great cause. Was it Cami Fleming, the Wests, the Jaffas or Lutzs.....? Or could it have been Damascus, Daniel, Jason, Chrisrty or the Corbins? Regardless of who it was THANK YOU for taking a minute to read our story...............
In 2003, my husband Mack was diagnosed with brain cancer. He was 24. With a ten month old little girl at the time and a brand new house payment, we were devestated. However, with the love and support of our family and friends, he fought a very long three year battle. Sadly, after two sucessful surgeries to remove tumors, radiation treatments, Temodar chemotherapy meds, Cyberknife Treatments at Georgetown Hospital, 2 rounds of physical/life therapy and many many hospital visits in between...... his battle was lost and he peacefully passed February 5, 2006 leaving me absolutely heartbroken and again, devestated.
With all that said....I can honestly say I feel lucky. Mack was truely my soulmate and I spent 11 years of my life with the a man I admired, and adored! We met in highschool, got engagead at 18..... young I know ~ but HELLO, how often do ya meet your SOULMATE? It didnt matter how old we were, I knew he was the one! And so, we were married at 20. A month after he passed we would have celebrated his 28th birthday, our daughters 4th birthday and the following month.....our 8th wedding anniversary! I love that man more then any words could express. The last three years with Mack sick or not were the best years I could of dreamed of. Anyone who knew Mack would tell you he was a determined individual who never thought of himself as "sick". Majority of the time, if you wouldn't of even known he had cancer. He didn't allow anyone to feel sorry for him. He lived his life just as he always had, with the ocassional seizure and/or hospital visit thrown into the mix. He continued to play basketball, competitevely I might add!! He continued to baby his mustang and was lucky enough to have spent a tremendous amout of time playing with his daughter and loveing his wife (me!!) He was a good man. Content and enjoyed his life to the fullest. It was his determination, his faith and his hope that kept those around him, especially me, from falling apart. Mack was the type of person people gravitated towards. He loved his family and friends and spending time with those who meant the most to him. He was fun, loving and sincere. People admired him and loved to be around.
I believe it was 2004 that Mack and I discussed participating in a walk for brain cancer research. We found this site, NBTF, but was disappointed to find out that there were no walks anywhere near us! Well, here it is 2007 - a year a half after Mack had passed and FINALLY a walk near our home..... a year a half too late....or is it...?!?
I am deeply sadden by the fact that Mack is not here to walk with me. I miss him more and more everyday and want so badly to honor him and make him proud! Theres not a day that goes by that he's not in my thoughts. How can I possible honor him any more then I do on a daily basis?!?!? ! Mack would say - "Suck it up girl.....!" One of many of his famous little quotes!! =) THEREFORE, I can WALK, it's what he would do ~ and YOU...? Well YOUcan walk with me or support my team! Team Mack Daddy that is!
Sooooo ~ I am absolutely thrilled to be participating in the 1st annual Angel Adventure Walk for the Washnigton DC Metro area! I will be walking with my now five year old daughter Hailey, and a fabulous team of my most favorite people which includes our family and closest friends all in honor of the one and only Mack McKee!!!
"Attitude is a little thing that can make a BIG difference"~ Winston Churchill, this I beleive could of been mack's motto......he never had the "cancer can't" attitude!
