Molly passed away from her autoimmune disease on February 15, 2007. Thank you all for your help, caring and generosity.

Here is my story (as told by my foster mommy):

"Molly is a sweet 10 year old female beagle that has a blind eye from a tangle with a cat when she was younger and is very, very small. She weighed less than 17lbs when I got her right before Christmas and she was in pretty bad shape. She was previously diagnosed with having a condition specific to her paws which she was supposed to be treated with foot soaks. It is unfortunate that this was not the problem and she was probably in alot of pain for quite a while.

Molly has officially been diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder. In simple terms, this means that Molly's body is attacking itself because it is confused about what is healthy or not.

Since her diagnosis with auto-immune medical condition, she started taking prednisone, which is a medication used to suppress the immune system. She was hit hard by receiving 15mg twice per day. She is now down to 5mg once per day, which is still quite a bit. What is significant about this is that her urine tests have been coming back showing high protein which is suspect of a kidney problem; however, there was a theory that the proteins could be a result of the auto-immune condition and might have gone away.

Prednisone and kidney problems do not mix well. Unfortunately, they haven't gone away, which then resulted in the need to perform x-rays and another blood test. X-rays reveal that her kidneys are fine - which is GREAT news! However, the recent blood test show that her blood sugars are off the charts (so-to-speak). Initially they were showing around 145 and today came back close to 700. What does this mean?

It means that she is now diabetic. The problem is that a diabetic dog that must take prednisone to treat an immune disorder is very difficult to take care of and will require close watching with the constant need for prednisone, insulin, and possibility of blood tests, urine tests, etc. At the low end, it would run around $150-200 per month in medication, tests and supplies."
