There is an acute housing crisis for low-income residents of Washington, DC. Rents and home sale prices are rising faster than wages, and the number of low-cost units is dropping sharply. DC Habitat for Humanity homes are answering the need for decent, safe, affordable housing.

Founded in 1988, our affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, has built more than 100 homes and renovated 75 cooperative units. We are an independent, 501(c)3 charitable organization and we must raise 100% of the funds we use to build homes in DC.

Donors help purchase building materials and volunteers provide the labor for Habitat houses, helping keep our building costs below market. Homes are then sold to low-income homeowner candidates through a no-profit, no-interest 25-year mortgage financed by DC Habitat. Mortgage payments are deposited into a revolving Fund for Humanity to help finance future home building. Homeowner candidates are also required to perform 300 hours of "sweat equity" building their home and those of their Habitat neighbors.
