Joining the Literacy Mid-South Board this past year has opened my eyes to the daily challenges that illiterate adults face.  Literacy Mid-South is a non-profit organization in Memphis working to create a community actively engaged in continuous learning through its many important programs.  Being able to effectively communicate with and understand others in the most basic fashion is something that I took for granted before I met the students of LMS and heard their incredible stories. 

In Memphis, more than 120,000 people are considered functionally illiterate.  This number (1 in 5 Memphians) is staggering and is a substantial obstacle to the progress that the Memphis community is striving to make. 

Please help Literacy Mid-South tutor hundreds of people this year by contributing to the 2012 tutoring campaign.  Your gift will provide classrooms with books, computers, and supplies.  The students of LMS are working diligently to make changes in their lives.  Please assist them in their pursuits of reading proficiency, obtaining a GED, understanding road signs, and learning to read to their children.
