Beginning with my admittance to Syracuse University I have proudly identified myself as an “Orange-Woman.” The title immediately allowed others to know I was a woman who prided herself of scholarly excellence and aligned herself with a long history of outstanding athletics. The name of my Alum mater always impressed my peers as the reputation of superior athletics, education, and Greek life is intrinsically tied to the University.
I have always worn my Orange gear with pride because I earned it. I completed my education with Syracuse University and have unwaveringly supported Syracuse Orange.
However, as of late I have found myself less prideful and less able to adorn my Orange gear. I represent Syracuse University; however, as of late we have seen a new representation of a figurehead of generations of students and fans. It is impossible for us to sever all ties with Bernie Fine because of his over two-decade long history as a pillar of the nationally renowned basketball team. Unfortunately, who and what an Orange man looks like have begun to shift in the nation’s eyes.
I, however, do not desire for my Syracuse to be forever linked with the child abuse scandal which has rocked the Syracuse community. I did not earn that reputation. In order for the Syracuse University community to heal we need to take positive measures to combat these horrible negative things that happened.
In Nancy Cantor’s most recent email to the SU community she stated: “We do not tolerate abuse. If anything good comes out of this tragedy, it will be that this basic principle is reinforced.” We can reinforce our intolerance of abuse through our support of the prevention of child abuse.
With this said I ask you to join me in aligning ourselves with the prevention and advocacy of child abuse rather than the cause.
Prevent Child Abuse America is a Better Business Bureau accredited non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
