Dear Friends,

 

What if someone told you that for about $30 you could save a child’s life?  Would you give if you believed it to be true?  Well it is true.  The lack of clean drinking water is the number one killer of children in the world and it is certainly the easiest mass problem to solve.  Every year, Americans spend about $450 billion on Christmas gifts, while for about $10 billion every person in the world could have access to clean drinking water.  That’s about 2% of the cost of the gifts Americans exchange.

 

On January 1, 2009, I will be leading a Polar Bear Plunge into the 55 degree water of the Pacific Ocean in San Clemente to help raise awareness and money to buy a well for a remote village in Nkhoma, Malawi.  As some of you know, I visited this part of Malawi earlier this year and got the chance to witness firsthand the plight of people there and how a simple water well providing a protected water source can transform their lives from one of famine and starvation to health and abundant water for their crops.  Based on the number of people it supports, the cost of such a well in Malawi costs about $30 per person to dig and install.

 

The picture on the left is from my trip and shows how children around Malawi can easily collect clean water for their families to nourish their bodies and hydrate their crops.  I hope you will join me in this effort by giving at this website and, if you are in the Orange County area on New Years Day at 10 am, come down to Calafia State Beach at the foot of Avenida Calafia in South San Clemente and take a cold swim with me.  I might be by myself or with dozens of friends, but I won’t be alone as the faces and voices of these children I visited in Malawi with always be with me.
