Thank you for visiting our Personal Fundraising Page.
Remembering when Nicholas was born and discovering he has Down syndrome, we entered a world that we were not expecting. At the same time we were amazed at how quickly we fell in love with this little one. Just as quickly we became afraid. Inside we know, that this special child is a gift. These same feelings are being experienced every day by new parents, and they won't know where to start, but they won't be alone.
There should not be one child born with Down syndrome who doesn't know love and acceptance. Not one of these precious children should have their voice taken from them by people who do not know them. No parent should feel desolation and overwhelmed by challenges. No family should have to make choices that cause their child with a disability to have to leave home or not receive services they need to live their best lives.
Nicholas is 2 1/2 and is walking all over; using his signs; finding trouble; playing with his dogs, cats, horses, and sisters; and loves singing and dancing. He is a blessing in our life and continues to provide joy and happiness to everyone he can. Nicholas will need life long supports in order to live, work and be active in our community. Our family depends on DSAM for resources to assist in our experiences as Nicholas grows. We are counting on DSAM to help make sure the supports and services that he and many others need will be there. When Nicholas joined our family two and a half years ago, DSAM was one of the first places we looked for information and support. Your gift will help DSAM continue to make a difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families. DSAM was started by a small group of concerned parents who envisioned a better life for their children who had Down syndrome.
In 1995 NDSS (Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota is affiliated with the National Down Syndrome Society) initiated the Buddy Walk to promote awareness and advocacy for people with Down syndrome. Walks are held in October to mark National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Last year 250,000 people participated in 250 walks across the U.S., while over 5000 people participated in Minnesota's Buddy Walk.
Please join us in contributing to this wonderful organization, so that this vital work can continue. You can also join us at the Buddy Walk. See details at www.dsamn.org.
