Kevin Wiese's Page

Hello! I am Det. Kevin Wiese with the Omaha Police Department. I have been involved with the Law Enforcement Torch run since 2008 and have been helping ever since. When I first was a part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, I did it because of the running end of things and not the Special Olympics. I quickly learned from a parent during my first torch run why the Special Olympics were so important.

The parent explained to me that their child had been growing up without any real friends or direction in their life due to their disability. Despite the efforts of the family to make their son's life meaningful, the son was unhappy and had made mentions of suicide. This family was from a rural area and had to drive at first for their son to be involved in activities, but the family got their son involved in the Special Olympics after talking with people about what they could do. Their son got involved in Special Olympics and the parent mentioned to me that I would not even know now that it was the same person as before. As a tear ran down their cheek, the explained that their son now has a job, direction in his life, happiness, and more friends than he can keep track of. I met their son who had the biggest smile on his face and the greatest appreciation for such a small thing that I was doing. I forget his name, but I will never forget his smile, the conversation I had with him, and the talk I had with the parent. It was one of the most powerful things I had ever heard.

Since that discussion with the parent, I have been involved in Special Olympics trying to raise money and awareness for a segment of society that often gets overlooked. I was very fortunate to be able to reach my goal and dream of becoming a police officer. I was blessed by God and given the ability to reach this. There are many people that I see everyday that were born with some sort of disability that prevents them from doing some of the things that I am able to do. I don't have any children or family that grew up in Special Olympics, but this community is now apart of my family and me theirs and I have made a committment to try to help as much as I can.

The Cage-a-cop event is an event to try to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics. My hopes are that more people will be able to get involved in the Special Olympics and more funds will get raised to help children or adults with disabilities to have fun and play games and sport through the Special Olympics. Often times a long term disability can be a major financial burden for a family who has a child with a disability and money raised is money that a family or friend will not have to spend to give their child or friend an opportunity to have fun, make friends, and gain confidence, and gain a direction for their life.

I am asking that everyone give a little so that we, as a community, can impact people's lives in a part of our community that is often neglected.

-Kevin
