Well Women’s Project in Kenya
Kenya Orphanage Project (KOP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support the ongoing operation and development of Jubilee Children's Center (located in Ruai District of Nairobi, Kenya) and provide continuous education for those children whose parents have died of AIDS. http://www.kenyaorphanageproject.org/index.html
The International Awareness and Involvement Committee has identified the Jubilee Children’s Center through the Kenya Orphanage Project (KOP) mission. by supplying the Jubilee Center with sponsorship to purchase reusable sanitary pads for young girls.
Objective: To reduce absenteeism from school due to lack of sanitary towels and to help foster positive self-esteem.
Goal: Provide funding to purchase reusable/disposable feminine products for 20 girls (ages 10-16) at the Jubilee Children’s Center in Nairobi, Kenya.
Background Information on the need for these products:
- A girl absent from school due to menses for 4 days in 28 days (a month) loses 13 learning days equivalent to 2 weeks of learning in every school term.
- In a year (9 months) a girl loses 39 learning days equivalent to 6 weeks of learning time. A girl in a primary school between grades 6 and 8 (3 years) loses 18 learning weeks of a 108 week program.
- Within the 4 years of high school the same girl loses 156 learning days equivalent to almost 24 weeks out of 144 weeks of learning in High school!!
- This is a clear indication that a girl child is a school drop-out while still in school.
Reusable versus disposable pads: (Optional)
Providing reusable supplies not only provides a more environmentally friendly alternative for these young women (in areas of adequate water supply for washing), it reduces their independence on outside aid organizations to continue providing for their monthly needs.
