As a mother of a child with a Pediatric Neuromuscular disorder and four "other" children, I know firsthand that "his" sibs need support too.  It often feels that my entire family has Duchenne, not just Jett.  It affects all five children in different ways.  I strongly believe that we can support the brothers and sisters of children with special needs by training parents and service providers - i am asking for your monetary support to sponsor this exciting endeavor.  Furthermore, I invite ALL parents and caregivers to particpate...this is not a New England only event and hope that many parents, adult sibs and caregivers participate!!!  

 

Over the last 18 months, the Jett Program for Pediatric Neuromuscular Disorders at MGHfC has identified the need to address brothers and sisters who have a sibling with a neuromuscular disorder.  The Jett Program will sponsor a one-day workshop for parents, adult sibs, and service providers on brothers’ and sisters’ unique joys and concerns.  We’ll also offer a two-day training for those wishing to start Sibshops for siblings of children with neuromuscular disorders.  Sibshops offer young, typically developing brothers and sisters peer support and information in a lively, recreation environment that emphasizes wellness.  Sibshops, a needed service for our “other kids” will be a welcome addition to the services currently provided by the Jett Foundation.  
 
Leading the workshops and trainings will be Don Meyer of The Sibling Support Project and creator of the Sibshop program.  Don has presented on sibling issues to parents and providers in every state and in eight countries and his workshops are always well received.  He is the author or editor of four books on sibling issues and has helped local communities start 230 Sibshops around the world.  For more information visit www.siblingsupport.org <http://www.siblingsupport.org>
