First, thank you for visiting this page. Haiti needs long-term sustained development! Aid comes in waves. Pretty soon the media will move on from this trajedy and Haiti will be left at square one. Help earthquake survivors build back their small businesses and their lives!

This is the grassroots part of the fundraising campaign. By reaching out to everyone you know with a request for a minimum of $5.00, you are ensuring the development of an imperative program that lifts families out of abject poverty and helps them on the road to economic self-sufficiency.

WHERE IS THE DONATION GOING TO?  The funding is going directly to Grameen Foundation programs in Haiti, such as its work with the Haitian microfinance institution Fonkoze. The Grameen Foundation is deeply and critically involved in helping Haitians rebuild their small businesses and their lives.

WHAT'S UNIQUE ABOUT FONKOZE? Fonkoze has spearheaded one of the world's premier pilot-programs for the extrememe poor- Chemin Lavi Miyo, or Pathway to a Better Life. $300.00 lifts a family out of dire poverty, giving them the assets and training to later graduate into the official microlending program.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT CHEMIN LAVI MIYO? Chemin Lavi Miyo is one of the world's premier pilot projects to end extreme poverty. Families (often headed by single women) receive solid assets like goats, chickens or a limited amount of merchandise to begin their business. Case managers visit twice weekly to assist in development of new homes, latrines, asset management and business development. Case managers also help to ensure that all children are enrolled in school.

WHY HAITI? Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and suffers from a history of political instability, poor health care, and high levels of illiteracy and unemployment. In addition, high inflation and a growing national debt continue to be serious problems. Approximately 15 percent of the estimated demand for microfinance is currently being met.

HAITI FACTS:

  • Over 40% of the population is unable to read or write as compared to the 12% overall illiteracy in the rest of Latin America.
  • A woman in Haiti can expect to live 49 years, down from 54 in 1999.
  • Half of the children under 5 are malnourished.
  • Less than 50% of school age children attend school.

FONKOZE'S COMMITTMENT TO ITS CLIENTS:

  • You and your children will have food in your stomachs every day.
  • Your children will all be enrolled in school.
  • Your home will have a cement floor, a tin roof and a latrine.
  • You will have assets that you can see accumulateing day by day (land, buildings, animals, savings).
  • You will know how to read and write
  • You will have the confidence to face your future, no matter what it holds.
