Dear Friends,
It’s that time of year again: the winds are howling, the thermometers seem to show nothing more than a sliver of red outside our windows, and the season’s first snowfall has long lost its mystical enchantment to the most of us. The thought of doing anything outdoorsy is out of the question, as the idea of putting on three layers seems dreadfully absurd. It’s exactly at this moment when I find myself thinking, I love New England at this time of year.
However, I suppose that’s because I am fortunate enough to have a warm home to come back to once I realize how quickly the finger-numbing, joint-freezing cold can jolt you back to reality. Thankfully, I have the option to retreat inside to shelter myself at the least bit of frosty discomfort.
A run under these conditions seems out of the picture, but I believe that it’s the least that I can do to prove my support for the causes of an organization such as Horizons for Homeless Children (HHC). For 15 years, HHC has provided a second chance for families throughout Massachusetts. It gives the less fortunate an opportunity to get where they need to go and move forward with their lives so that they can get the same chances as everyone else. More importantly, the organization provides a positive venue for children to learn and play, the way every child should be able to.
HHC’s mission is to improve the lives of homeless children and their families. They’ve assisted thousands of these families throughout the years with nurturing and educational programs. They have helped parents attain their GEDs, establish job training sessions, and successfully complete their college courses. However, with recent data suggesting that there are currently more than 100,000 homeless children in the Bay State alone, there is still much more work to be done.
So, I am proud to say that I am running the Boston Marathon this year as an ambassador of HHC, an organization that provides so much for so many families. It’s an organization that gives children the opportunity for a better and brighter future.
This is why I’m writing to you today. I’d like to ask for your kind generosity and help, so that I may reach my total of $5000 to contribute to this cause. With your support, I can meet this goal. Anything you can give to this cause will be much appreciated. Together, we can help break the cycle of homelessness.
