Meet Michael. I accepted him into rescue in January from a Humane Society. He was an owner surrender that was given up for fighting with the other unneutered males in the house. He was not neutered, not current on his shots and he was positive for heartworm. He passed his temperament test and was very sweet.
When Michael arrived at our vet clinic he was barely alive. Michael had the worst case of heart worm the rescue had ever seen. The vet had seen only 1 case that was worse. Michael was grossly underweight but more importantly, the heartworm forced him to sit up with his head held up, straining his neck. Michael was fighting for each breath. He could not eat because he could not breathe. He could not lie down because he could not breathe. The initial x-ray showed both lungs were completely congested.
After four long months of drugs, treatments and crate rest Michael tested clear of heartworm May 25th. There were several close calls along the way but the turning point came when he survived his first treatment. Michael also gained 16 pounds in those 4 months. He found the most wonderful forever home in June.
Michael is an incredible dog. I am very proud to have been able to help him regain his health and join his forever home. He will be a great advocate to teach people the importance of heart worm preventative.
