4th Annual Autism Walk
If case you weren't aware, our son, Carter, was diagnosed with Autism back in October 2010 just after his 3rd birthday, however, we really knew back in July when we had him evaluated by Grant Wood for speech. The last 9 months have been hard for us, but we have pulled our way through with the love and support of our families, friends, coworkers, and the Autism Society. Never in a million years did we think our perfect little man would face such obstacles in his life and that our pediatricion and the traditional medical community would offer little to no help or guidance.
Through the Autism Society we have connected with other families that are going through the same thing we are, or that went through it years ago and are "experts" now and have tons of knowledge to relay to us.
Since July, we have done a lot of research and have been trying a lot of different things in terms of treatments and therapies for Carter. We have seen significant advances in his eye contact, speech, and social skills! However, even though we have excellent health insurance, most of these treatments are not covered by insurance.
Many families in our situation find that their insurance won't cover any expenses associated with Autism. It is absolutely crazy that 1 out of 110 kids today are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and yet so many of the treatments are not covered by health insurance.
The East Central Autism Society has helped our family so much by providing a support group, as well as making grants available to us to help pay for things like an initial diagnosis, therapies, and treatments. All of their funding is raised at the Annual Autism Walk each year.
Please come walk with us on April 30th or donate to our cause.
Thanks from the bottom of our hearts!
Mandy, Nick, Carter-Bear, and Kendall "Missy" Koch
