Background: On April 23, 2010, Arizona governor Jan Brewer signed into law the broadest and strictest anti-immigrant legislation in decades, sparking national outrage and lending a new sense of urgency to stop the hate and terrorizing of immigrants and people of color in Arizona and across the nation.

SB 1070 makes it a state misdemeanor crime for immigrants to be in Arizona without carrying immigration documents, and gives the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country without papers.  The bill is an open invitation for racial profiling, harrassment, and discrimination against all communties of color, including Latinos/as regardless of citizenship status.
