Kilimanjaro Climb for 22q13 Deletion Foundation

Kilimanjaro Climb Team

Do it for Dane

Children and Adults with 22q13 deletion syndrome face obstacles in their everyday lives.  Beginning May 18, 2007 a team of climbers will face a big obstacle of their own as they begin a trek up the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  The goal of this climb is to raise awareness of the 22q13 deletion syndrome (www.22q13.org) and raise money to help fund the 22q13 Deletion Foundation.

Mt. Kilimanjaro, formed by three volcanos, is the highest mountain in Africa at 19,340 feet or 5,895m, and it's the highest free standing mountain in the world.  Although not difficult in mountaineering terms (like Mt. Everest), the climb will still be quite challenging.  The climb will take 10 days (8 ½ days to climb up & 1 ½ days to get back down). The team will climb through five major vegetation zones on the way to the summit.

Although Kilimanjaro is among the easiest of the world’s major peaks, to summit requires climbing above 19,000 feet, good physical conditioning, enduring the elements, and a strong will to accomplish the task. While anyone in good fitness can expect to have a good chance at completing the climb, the big unknown is how one's body will react to the lower level of oxygen.  Failure to properly acclimatize can lead to Acute Mountain Sickness.

Cern Basher, the 22q13 Kilimanjaro Team leader and father of Dane Basher (7 yrs old with the 22q13 deletion) explains why he’s doing this climb:

Our son Dane is not yet able to speak or walk independently, but he works so hard everyday to learn to do those things.  In the local Wachagga dialect, the name of the mountain is Kilima-Ngiaro, meaning the ‘journey which has no ending.’ This is the journey that Dane bravely faces.  Dane has inspired his grandfather, our friends Wendy and Dan, and me to do this climb and push ourselves to achieve heights we’ve never obtained.  If Dane can put in so much effort each and every day, then we can certainly climb this mountain.  We have no lack of motivation.  Our motto for the climb is ‘Do it for Dane’.  And, we will.

The team has been training since September 2006 for the climb.  Dan has currently lost over 45 pounds and is training hard everyday.  Wendy, a strong kayaker, has been working on strengthening her core.  And, Nolan has been climbing active volcanos in New Zealand!
