Walking for Grandpa
As many of you know, I began working at the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan in October. I am thrilled to be here, helping bring more success and funding to our programs and services in Michigan. I feel that walks are such a wonderful way to raise money while having a great time. I am committed professionally to fundraising, but you may not know why I am committed personally.
My father-in-law, "Grandpa" to my kids, is on dialysis. His kidneys failed as an end result of polycystic kidney disease, coupled with the effects of diabetes. Dad is the type of Grandpa who is one part Santa, one part Navy, and many parts loving, caring man. He and Grandma raised 6 boys (born in about 7 years), have 16 grandchildren, and one new great-grandchild. They have devoted their lives to their family, and are a beautiful example of a strong, devoted, loving marriage.
I know we have learned from them in our own marriage and have modeled much of our family life on theirs (except for the 6 kids!) I have seen this strong man fight for his life, battling infections, heart problems, diabetes, and now end-stage renal failure. He would be the last to expect pity, and that is not why we are here. This walk is about hope. Hope that he will receive a transplant. Hope that no one else in our family will have to go through this. Hope that those in our community will receive the message of prevention and help that the National Kidney Foundation is presenting. Kidney Disease can be fought, and the fight can be won!
Please support our family as we walk for our Grandpa in Grand Rapids, and all of the Grandpas in Michigan.
