Who we are:
Dr. Cheryl Bologna is taking a trip to Vientiane, Laos at the end of February 2011. Accompanying her is her nephew, Kenny Carter, a student pursuing a career in Dentistry. Dr. Bologna's goal is to educate the faculty and students in Laos.
Dr. Cheryl Bologna has been practicing dentistry for 20 years in the Dearborn area. She is an active member in the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, and the Detroit District Dental Society. She is a member of the Peer Review Committee for the Detroit District, and participates in the Give Back a Smile program. Dr. Bologna is a member and is actively involved with the American Orthodontic Society.
Kenny Carter is currently a sophomore at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, MI. Upon completion of his pre-requisite classes at Schoolcraft, Kenny plans on finishing his undergraduate degree in Human Biology at Michigan State University. Inspired by his aunt, Dr. Bologna, Kenny decided to pursue the field of dentistry. He has thoroughly enjoyed interning at Dr. Bologna’s practice since August of 2009 and is always looking for opportunities to get involved, particularly in the field of dentistry.
Why we're going:
The dental department of the National University of Laos is in need of help when it comes to modern dental techniques and supplies. The facilities are old and only 5 out of the 15 dental chairs are in operable condition. The students practice on extracted teeth, but cannot use the actual restorative materials, as they are saved for patient treatment. Hand instruments are in generally poor condition and in short supply. The students primarily observe and do not have many hours of patient care available in the clinic. Needless to say, the dental field in Laos is drastically different from ours here in America, where they don’t have access to everyday oral techniques and supplies. Dr. Bologna will be giving lectures on different oral techniques, along with some possible hands-on labs.
