While this has been a fantatic summer spending a lot of time with family and friends at the beach, playing in the dunes, boating, and kayaking, I have also been training hard in the wee hours of the morning -- that's right, as early as 5:30am -- for a half marathon.  Along with a good friend I am blending a personal goal (running a half marathon) with a great passion (the Great Lakes).  Let me explain ...

I love the Great Lakes for so many reasons including the world-class beaches and dunes we play on, the breathtaking scenery, the water I drink, and the fact they are part of my history that I am now passing onto my sons. And it is an honor for me to work for Freshwater Future, the only organization dedicated soley to helping those around the Great Lakes region care for this national treasure.

It's of great concern to me that an invasive species of fish, the Asian carp, is swimming toward our lakes and thus threatening our Great Lakes way of life. I don't want to worry about my kids getting hit by a 40+ pound flying fish when we go boating or that my family might not be able to enjoy fishing in Lake Michigan because our native fish have been wiped out!  I am doing something about it and I invite you to join me. 

I will be running a half marathon on September 18th (no this is not a joke -- I'm really doing it)!  I am running to raise money for Freshwater Future's work.  Freshwater Future is leading the way in making sure decision makers know we want a solution to the Asian carp situation and we cannot afford to wait any longer to act—there is too much at stake. If we fail to act now, the Great Lakes may never recover from this invasion.
