Some facts about me and other penguins...
As you can see from the picture, me and some of my closest friends are preparing to jump in the frigid water of the raging Atlantic Ocean. According to my penguin buddies the average air temperature is about a balmy 35 degrees - close to the steamy water temperature:) It is for a great cause and I am sure it will be an experience I wil not soon forget. Please help me and fellow penguin plungers meet our goals to help support the NH Special Olympics.
I am a Callahan Penguin, known mostly for being a die-hard Red Sox Fan, going to buffets and working at Monadnock Developmental Services, I am found mostly in the southwestern region in New Hampshire. However, I have been known to travel some distance. Our particular clan of penguins includes two young penguins and a mother penguin. They will not be plunging but may in future years. They are planning to watch the plunge with jackets and hats. Hopefully, the other penguins in my clan don't think I am too crazy:) Thank you again for your penguin plunge support.
Penguins are birds that have adapted very well to life in the water. Their wing bones are flipper-like and, while useless for flying, are extremely well-suited to swimming. All penguins are “countershaded”, which means that they are darkly colored on their backs and white on their bellies. Countershading helps to camouflage penguins as they swim through the water; predators looking up from below a penguin have trouble seeing their white bellies against the light surface of the water, while predators looking down from above have trouble seeing their black backs against the darkness of the deep water.
Size The fairy penguin is the smallest of the penguin species at 16 inches tall. It weighs about 2.2 pounds. The largest penguin species is the emperor penguin, which is about 3.7 feet tall and weighs between 60 and 90 pounds.
Lifespan 15 to 20 years depending on the species.
