2012 Asheville Ride for Kids®

Six years ago a friend and fellow motorcyclist told me about a fundraising ride in Asheville NC, benefitting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I went on the ride that year and at the end they give you lunch and have speakers and survivors. The first year there was a man who had lost his daughter the previous year to a brain tumor, after a heroic three year battle, his story brought the entire crowd to tears and inpired me to ride every year since.

It has become a family tradition, the second year Adam rode with me alone and all years since Mollie, Adam and I all participated in the ride. We became involved and started to volenteer registering riders at the start of the ride. This year we did not volenteer and almost decided not to ride as we are so "busy". We arrived just in time to register and the ride began. It was a beautiful cool morning and the ride was awesome. The finish was in Lake Lure and it was awesome. We stayed for a little while but left early to do other things.

Later that day after visiting my mom in Asheville. Then on the way to visit Mollies dad in the hospital, we went to a fast food place for a snack for Adam.( Adam and I had on shirts from the ride for kids) one of the employees asked me if I had gone today. I was not sure what he meant when i remembered the shirt. When I told him we had gone, he shook my hand and thanked me. I told him we had been doing the ride for six years, and he told me if I had been for the last six years my first ride was the one in memory of his daughter. I suddenly realized that this was the man I had seen speak that first year. He showed me a picture of his precious daughter on his cell phone and shared his story with me. Her name is Mary Ann Sluder and she was lost to this terrible disease in 2003. His name is Rocky, and I will never forget them.

It made me realize what an important thing the Ride For Kids Is. I will do my best to never miss a ride event. The money raised goes directly to help these children and their families deal with this terrible disease. It also provides scholarships for those who are survivors.

After you read this take a minute and say a prayer for those affected by these tumors, and also for Rocky and the family of Mary Ann Sluder. God Bless
