Dear Family and Friends,
I have very exciting news…this summer “Kidsborough is turning 10.” Last fall, I decided to celebrate this milestone by running in the 113th Boston Marathon on April 20, 2009. I soon learned that there are two ways to get a number (a bib) to run Boston. The first is by running a prior marathon in a qualifying time. The second way (for the rest of humanity;) is to raise funds for one of the charitable organizations selected by the Boston Athletic Association.
As a Hodgkins survivor, the logical choice would have been to run for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I would have been inspired and felt that I was giving back, but this knowing little voice inside my head kept saying:
“Do something that benefits children”
That is when I found Horizons for Homeless Children. It seemed so appropriate to celebrate the accomplishments of Kidsborough and the children that make it so unique by assisting less fortunate children in their time of need.
Since 1994, Horizons for Homeless Children has been improving the lives of homeless children and their families in so many ways. The two programs I find most inspiring are the Playspace and Adult Education Programs. The Playspace program creates a typical childcare environment within the homeless shelter, providing the children living in family shelters in Greater Boston the opportunity to play, share, read, learn and just be kids. Through the Adult Education Program, parents learn how to be nurturing and involved in the growth and development of their children. Likewise, parents are given the opportunity to learn and improve themselves through job training, GED and college courses. In summary, Horizons for Homeless Children is attempting to break the cycle of homelessness by helping to stabilize families so that they can weather any crisis.
I feel fortunate to have been selected by this organization to run on their behalf. These children and their families have been on my mind during every run, especially on those January mornings when it was 5˚outside. I hope you will join me in celebrating Kidsborough’s 10th Anniversary by helping me to raise $10,000 for this life-changing organization.
All My Best,
Christeen Rohwer
