As a person born with cataracts back in the 1970's; I know what it feels like to be shunned by society for looking different. While in elementary and middle school, I loved participating in the Special Olympics fror the physically disabled. It was a time where I did not have to put up with the ridicule, the stares, and the isolation from my peers. It was a day where I could just be a normal kid.
Participating in the Special Olympics help foster self esteem, courage, and pride in my self, acceptance of my physical disability, and an 'I can do it" spirit that is often difficult to find in people who a labeled by society.
Please give to the Special Olympics so they can continue to do for children what they did for me. Everyone has a right to find their voice and succeed in their own special way. Some people just need a different avenue to help them find their way.
