Cycling for Alzheimer's
...300 miles...4 days...$2,500...
WHY AM I DOING THIS? #1. It's a personal experience: Janina Berrocal has been a loving aunt all my life. For many years, she possessed amazing seamstress talents. My sister and I loved parading in beautiful dresses she made us when we were young girls. She even made my First Communion dress look like a gown! Her kitchen always smelled of her delicious home-cooking. And she was a happy conversationalist. Although she is in the advanced stages of the disease, her smile and laugh still have a contagious quality. My aunt, "titia" as we call her, has been living with Alzheimer's for over 10 years. Alzheimer's is painful, difficult, and frightening. My cousin, Yvette, has cared for her faithfully. I am doing this for them both. #2. It's a physical challenge: I am not a cyclist. In fact, the last time I was on a bike ride was in Nice, France where I ended on my back in an ambulance. The training effort will be huge, my fear of traffic will be faced, and my bum will learn the meaning of endurance. #3. It's an emotional endeavor: I expect to feel tired, elated, frustrated, and hopeful. I imagine I will learn something about myself and more from other people. To be a part of the care and cure for this disease is the reward.
