I like to move - those of you who know me are aware of this. Living with type 1 diabetes and being enroute to my fiftieth birthday inspired me to do something to make a difference for those who have or are developing type 1 diabetes. My goal is to bike 5,000 miles from my 49th birthday to my 50th birthday. The 5,000 mile commitment translates to16-17 miles per day six days per week for 52 weeks. I plan to use the patience and persistence 30 years of diabetes management has taught me to cross the finish line on December 4, 2012.
The funds raised from this ride will benefit type 1 diabetes research at UMass Medical School Diabetes Center of Excellence. For over 13 years, I have come to know and receive my diabetes care from the tremendous researchers and care providers at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care. I have confidence that if anyone can figure out the puzzle of genetics and environmental effects that result in type 1 diabetes, they can.
Donating to the UMass Memorial Diabetes Center of Excellence Gift Fund through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts. You can also donate with a check made out to UMass Memorial Foundation write "5,000 miles to 50" in the "for" section and mail to Katie Friend, UMass Medicine Development Office, 333 South Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
I plan to update this site weekly with progress on the virtual journey.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might be interested in following the ride and help support it.
