Chris Porter's Personal Fundraising Page
Thank you for visiting my Personal Fundraising Page. I feel like it is as important now as it was in the 1980s to donate to a cause that actively works to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS. Many things have changed since AIDS first became public. However, several things have stayed relevant. The need to spread awareness as well as provide assistance to those affected by HIV/AIDS has not changed. In some ways the type of assistance has changed over time. Today, the need for testing, counseling, providing medication assistance, and housing assistance are the primary focus. AIDS Walk Kansas City distributes donations to HIV/AIDS related support organizations throughout the Kansas City Metro area who provide such services. A few of these organizations are Good Samaritan Project, Hope Care Center and the Free Health Clinic.
I do not think it is too bold to say that each of us knows someone affected by HIV/AIDS, whether we know it or not. Donating to AIDS Walk in one way or another assists these people at some point in their life. Personally, I watched a friend get sick and die from AIDS-related illnesses. Although it was very difficult to witness first-hand my friend’s health deteriorate, what was even more troubling was that it was avoidable. Services are available thanks to AIDS Walk, which allow people with HIV/AIDS to get treatment if they choose to.
With medication costs of roughly $2400 per month, even for people with insurance coverage, the co-pay can prevent them from being able to afford the medications on a monthly basis. Good Samaritan Project provides co-pay assistance to those who cannot afford it, as well as paying the entire bill for those even less financially able.
Hope Care Center provides housing for those affected who are no longer to work or financially support themselves, keeping people from becoming homeless due to their disease.
The Free Health Clinic has been a very important part of stopping the spread of HIV through their services of testing, counseling and providing medical care to those in need. Rapid testing and counseling has been a vital part of the puzzle in ending the spread of HIV.
Please take a moment to consider how you can help fight the spread of HIV. I have listed below several ways to contribute besides solely a financial donation.
1) Donate to my personal fundraising page
2) Donate via check/cash: Send to AIDS Walk KC, c/o Chris Porter, 3700 Holmes St, Kansas City, MO 64109
3) Join my AIDS Walk 2012 team “Second Chance” and start your own fundraising page by emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info
4) Forward the link to my personal fundraising page to friends and family. Include how you know me and how I am working to end the spread of HIV
5) Read "My Dream to Trample AIDS" by Don Carrel. Available at amazon.com as well as many retailers.
Advances in HIV research have been making the news lately with the possibility of a vaccine, as well as therapies to stop the spread of HIV. History is being made every moment, but it is not possible without continued awareness and education about HIV.
Thank you for all of your support!!
