Welcome to the 2008 NC Cure Pulmonary Hypertension Golf Tournament giving webpage.

This year our tournament honoree is little 4-year old Bailey from Mocksville, NC. Miss Bailey was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) when she was just 15 months old. She started having episodes of turning blue, being so very tired and shortness of breath. To look at her today you would never guess there is a serious illness lurking inside. Medications are the band-aid that keeps her going. Bailey and her parents travel to New York City 2-3 times a year to see a pediatric cardiologist, Dr Erika Berman who specializes in treating children with PH.  There is no cure for PH which is the reason for holding events such as this tournament—to raise research funds to find a PH cure.

 

PH is high blood pressure but only in the lungs. The pulmonary arteries which carry blood from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen become progressively narrowed. This causes the heart to work harder trying to pump blood to the lungs. Being overworked the heart enlarges and eventually fails as a pump. When the drugs no longer work the only other option that might be considered is a lung transplant.
