The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) is a cause very dear to my heart. Four years ago my best friend at Columbia, Akiva, was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor that was characterized as inoperable given it was inside the brainstem. After discovering the tumor had grown 50% in three months, he decided to have an operation and found a cowboy+superhero doctor in Arizona willing to perform the risky surgery. The surgery had some complications and left him with several neurological disorders, to name a few, double-vision, loss of hearing on his right ear, the right side of his face paralyzed as well as his right eye. He had to relearn how to walk, talk, dress, shower, jump, everything!... It’s important to mention that he was about to start his senior year at Columbia when he was diagnosed. Well, not only was he successful in relearning all these things, but he went back to Columbia, was elected Senior Class President and graduated with honors. Then he went to the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and graduated with a Masters in Health Policy and Management. He met the love of his life and married her last year. Now he works at one of the top consulting firms in NYC as a healthcare consultant to Fortune 500 firms.
Akiva's story has a happy ending, but all that he has accomplished is due to his passion for life, his never-ending hope and his desire to help others. He is the most resilient person I have ever known and I’m extremely lucky to have him be part of my life because I have a lot to learn from him (I think we all do).
CBTF's objective is to improve the quality of life of the children affected with brain and spinal cord tumors and to provide support to their families. The Foundation helps them realize that with faith and perseverance everything can be accomplished, just like my friend Akiva did.
So – it would be GREAT if you can help me support the CBTF.
Moi and a group of my fabulous/beautiful friends (Tere, Jessica, Adri, Lore & Heidi) will be playing bowling for the cause on May 13th and your support will be highly appreciated. Every bit helps so donations of any size are welcome! ($5, $20, $100 or $1,000,000 – anything!)
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
Many thanks for your support!!! -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
