Update 4/22/10:

We just got the news that Berry is going to need to have her right leg amputated. :( Our surgeon feels that without amputation, Berry would have a life filled with arthritis and pain. She is having surgery this afternoon. Please send a few words of strength to Berry this afternoon!

Update 5/9/10:

Berry is doing fantastic! She has adjusted to being a three legged dog and it does not seem to faze her in the least. She is going to make a wonderful companion for the right family. She is still on crate rested as her spinal fractures heal. But, she is all puppy and happy, happy, happy!

Berry is as sweet as a juicy Blackberry! Unfortunately, her sweetness is tainted right now. A week ago Berry was hit by a car in front of her home. Her owners couldn't afford any medical care other than minimal pain medications. Berry sat for a week with her leg swelling to three times it's normal size. On Friday, Berry's owners had her picked up by Animal Control to be euthanized. Thankfully, we were able to hear about Berry's plight and were able to work with animal control to get her into our care.

Our worst fears were confirmed when Berry saw our vet on Saturday. Berry has mulitple broken bones and needs significant orthopedic surgery. Not only does she have a femur that is broken in two places, she has a two pelvic fractures. We have consulted with an orthopedic specialist who has helped us in the past and are looking at our surgery options. All of the options are costly and we want her to have a long and healthy life with as few complications as possible. The estimates for surgery range from $3000 to $7000 depending on which option we go with.

Berry is just 6 months old....just a baby really. She deserves to be out running and playing, but instead she is sitting with multiple broken bones while we raise the funds for her care. We are getting her pain meds regularly and making sure she is comfortable. We do not want to wait long and know that her surgery needs to happen this week.
