Marina is in pain and needs our help now!

Marina was found January 5th on the 90 Fwy in Marina Del Rey by two good samaritans after being hit by a car. She was initially found in the lanes of traffic. The two good samaritans who happened to be vet techs stopped traffic and were trying to figure out how to move her. At this point, Marina showed her shear will to survive and pulled her body completely across the freeway to the rescuers! They gently loaded her onto a board and into the back of a car. She was taken to an emergency vet hospital for pain meds and to keep her stabile.

Preliminary rays were taken january 6th and it was found that she has a spiral fracture in her Left hind distal femur. She also has a broken femoral head on the Right.

The good samaritans reached out to the rescue community for help. Coastal German Shepherd Rescue-Orange County rescued Marina but will need HELP to cover her medical costs. Our surgeon is worried about her condition and wants to do surgery as soon as possible.

Update 1/7:

The update from Dr. Wheaton at AliciaPet CareCenter is not so great. In addition to the significant injuries sustained to both of her legs, it looks like Marina may have some spinal issues to contend with. She is pretty unresponsive neurologically on her good leg, which is not a good sign. She will need significant surgery on both legs IF her neurological condition improves. Her care will be costly and lengthy.

Update 1/10: Marina's condiiton has not changed much. We were hoping for a lot of increased feeling in her hind legs but we did not get it. We are exploring our options for treating Marina. She is a strong girl and is very much a fighter with a will lo live!

Update 1/10pm: We have decided to transfer Marina to Dr. Hampel at Animal Medical Center in El Cajon. Dr. Wheaton and his staff gave Marina the best of care and have stabilized her to the point where transfering is possible Dr. Hampel is a specialty orthopedic surgeon who has done extensive work with stem cell therapy. We are going to have Marina evaluated for stem cell therapy and orthopedic surgery and see what we can do for her. She continues to want to survive!

Update 1/12: Marina is showing a small bit of increased feeling in her legs. A tiny bit is better than none!! We are encouraged by this tiny improvement. We have consulted with Dr. Hampel who has consulted with Vet Stem (the stem cell therapy group) and we are moving forward with both of her leg surgeries and stem cell therapy for her spine!! This is very exciting and we truly hope we can save Marina!

The surgeries and the Stem Cell Therapy is very costly! However, when we rescue an animal we commit to doing whatever we can to preserve their quality of life and give them the best chance at a long and happy life. Marina is a young, happy girl who deserves to live!

Update 1/13pm: Marina had her first surgery today for the femoral fracture repair and it went really well. They also harvested the fat tissue for the stem cells and may even do the injections tonight! Her bloodwork showed she is slightly anemic so they might have to delay the second surgery for the hip repair until Monday. They will see how her blood values are tomorrow.

She continues to amaze everyone with her sweet trusting nature. In spite of everything she has been through she is so happy and sweet. She seems very grateful for all the help she is receiving.

Update 1/15
Marina had her first of two surgeries and her stem cell therapy. Her own fat cells were removed and the regenerative stem cells were injected into her spine and neck. Her femur surgery went good and the doctors are happy with the repair that they were able to do. Now, Marina is resting and waiting for her second surgery on her other femoral head. We are waiting patiently to see what kind of progress she will make with the surgery and the stem cell therapy. We are optimistic but know she has a long road ahead of her still.
Marina continues to impress all who meet her with her sweet smile and gracious demeanor.
